Upcoming Ditko - Wait for it...

Making a lasting mark on comics as the co-creator of Spider-Man, Steve Ditko veered away from the mainstream and into darker territories at the end of the sixties, especially with his work in Creepy and Eerie! Warring wizards, paranoid goons, persistent heroes, and otherworldly domains dominate the diverse tales in this handsome hardcover collection—with fifteen of the sixteen stories written by fellow comics icon Archie Goodwin.

  1. This is probably one of the most desired Ditko reprints. All the stories were reprinted in the past few years in Dark Horse's collections of complete issues of EERIE and CREEPY, but because of the issue breaks you needed to get five $50 hardcovers to get all sixteen stories. This is... better.

  2. I have several of those stories as reprints in an old Warren magazine (Eerie I think) towards the end of their run.

I will be very happy to pick this up. Great news!

  3. YES! Probably the best news since the Gorgo/Konga collections. I can't wait!

  4. Who is the publisher of this book? Looks like a good bargain price-wise, and a must-have item for most Ditko fans.

  5. For those fans on a budget, track down Eerie #135 -- its an all-Ditko issue reprinting the best of these stories.

  6. Rob, sorry, I forgot to add the link (it's there now). Dark Horse is the publisher. I got the Wrightson book they did in the same series recently, and it's really nicely done. There's a big Corben volume I'm thinking of getting, too.

Mike, I'm not sure that at this point it would be cheaper to find a decent copy of EERIE #135, and you don't get "Room With A View" or "Deep Ruby" or "Black Magic" with that option.

  7. You might be right -- I searched eBay and did not see a single copy of Eerie 135 for sale! I figured they would be plentiful at maybe $3!

Demon Sword still one of my favorite short stories.

Of all the recent Ditko reprint compilations, I am interested to see this one, especially if they reproduce well Ditko's wash illustrations.

  8. I've only briefly looked at one of the Eerie Archive books that was in a library, but the reproduction on that (which I assume is what we'll see in this book) seemed pretty good. Not "freshly shot from the original art" good, but better than most. I'll take out a copy again and compare them more closely. And I just checked and they have volume 2 now, as well.

  9. Bob, am I reading you correctly? Will there be a second volume to the Ditko Creepy/Eerie reprints?

  10. Sorry, I meant my local library got the second EERIE ARCHIVES book since I last checked. The sixteen stories in the upcoming book will be all of the Ditko published by Warren. There's actually an interesting story in an old fanzine from a later Warren editor about what happened when he tried to get Ditko to do some more stories years later. I'll see if I can track it down.

  11. Ah, man... Okay, well, I was being greedy. It'll be great having Ditko's entire run in one book, though. Thanks for clarifying.

And I'm sure others beside myself would like to find that story you mentioned.

Thanks for the great job you do here on the Ditko Weblog.

  12. I've been waiting for this for years. One of my top wants. My bucketlist is shrinking. Still looking for the complete Garrett Price WHITEMAN/SKULL VALLEY and the complete HELP! a few others as well.
